Life is interesting, eh?
After 6 years of working in the “coveted” office job I always thought I should have, I finally got tired of crying on Sunday nights and not feeling fulfilled in life. I went to see a career counselor, Minda Redburn, who helped me change my life. Through her process I rediscovered the option of being an Electrician. I had first learned of this through Oregon Tradeswomen, way back in 2007. At that time I wanted to be a carpenter, specifically a builder of straw bale houses. So I wasn’t as open to different trades or even to unions. Sigh. I eventually landed in said office job…
Fast forward through an intense application process via the NIETC. Let’s just say I was determined to get a good ranking and be accepted into the program as soon as possible, especially given the fact that I was starting this new career at 42!
I started Basic Skills, aka Boot Camp, on July 5, 2018 and started work on July 23. I haven’t looked back since then; there hasn’t been a chance as it often feels like I’m on fast moving train! I love what I am doing however and am so grateful for this amazing career that is life giving! I am slated to journey out in September 2023, if all goes according to plan.
I didn’t know much about what electricians did before I started this apprenticeship so much of it is brand new to my eyes and brain. I think it’s true for a lot of people outside of the Trades. Photos help illuminate this new world and the new skills I am learning. Check them out!
